Whale sharks, the largest fish species on Earth, can grow to more than 55 feet, while dwarf lantern sharks reach a mere eight inches.įormidable predators, sharks have mouths lined with multiple rows of individual teeth that fall out and grow back on a routine basis. Species in this subclass have skeletons made from cartilage, not bone, and have five to seven gill slits on each side of their heads (most other fish have only one gill slit on each side), which they use to filter oxygen from the water. Like rays and skates, sharks fall into a subclass of fish called elasmobranchii. The ocean’s top predators have evolved into roughly 500 species that come in all different sizes and colors and have varying diets and behavior. Sharks star in blockbuster movies as blood-seeking villains, but in reality they’re far more fascinating and complicated than they’re often depicted in pop culture.īased on fossilized teeth and scales, scientists believe that sharks have been around for more than 400 million years-long before the dinosaurs. ![]()

In some ways, the worst thing a movie adaptation can do is try to be just like the book. Perhaps it lacks some plot points or elaborately described emotional lessons, but what it brings are music and costume and atmosphere and life, and it has to do that in a way that honors the spirit of the story it’s telling. What we sometimes fail to take into account, though, are all the things this medium adds to the work. It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that the book is always better than the movie because the movie has to leave out so much detail simply by virtue of being a different medium. It’s strange to value an adaptation primary based on how closely it resembles its source materials, but that seems to be what we do. It also probably meant that I needed to get outside more. I got to 67 items and decided this meant that the film was worthless. As a teenager, I once made a list of inaccuracies between Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and its movie counterpart. ![]() ![]() ![]() Along the way, I took advantage of some great opportunities to work on a variety of projects for many clients in many, diverse markets. ![]() That was a while (and more than 75 illustrated books) ago. The 21st Earl of Suffolk, who has died aged 87, succeeded his father at the age of six and described his career in Who’s Who as “owns 5,000 acres” his reticence was, perhaps understandable, since he was one of the models for Jilly Cooper’s hard-riding serial seducer Rupert Campbell-Black, but it hardly did justice to his achievement in creating, at his family seat, Charlton Park, near Malmesbury, one of the finest and most beautifully cared-for estates in England.Ĭharming, spirited and always entertaining company, “Mickey” Suffolk loved the good life and was delighted to be associated with Rupert Campbell-Black, who first bounded into the pages of fiction in Jilly Cooper’s novel Riders. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments Dirty billionaire trilogy![]() There are still two more books to the series, and we don’t have to wait long to get them. She also falls for softspoken Bill Steiner, the shop's young pawn-dealer, who courts her on his motorcycle and opens her to new worlds. In a far-away hockshop, Rose trades her engagement ring for a mystery-ridden painting of a woman in a crimson (rose-madder) chiton with her back to the viewer (one thinks of Wyeth's Christina's World), which she hangs in a new apartment found for her by the Daughters and Sisters, a battered women's group. But Daniels's job is finding people, and as a biter he's even more bent than the wife-beating police-chief in Nelson DeMille's Spencerville like his, Daniels's verbal rage allows no range to monolithic villainy. Similarly, I enjoyed seeing more from the servitors’ perspectives. It’s fun watching him grow a conscience, of sorts. He also really has no purpose outside of being Kujen’s weapon. He doesn’t trust Kujen (good), yet also has no idea how he could wrest more control over his own destiny. New Jedao (as I will call him) is unsure of himself. It’s so interesting, all these viewpoint characters, and the sympathies that they create. ![]() As war flares up over and over, it starts to look like Jedao vs Jedao might be the only way to end things-but what will the price be for humanity? ![]() Meanwhile, Brezan leads the rebels, and Cheris/Jedao is missing-she has a plan of her own. The Nirai hexarch, Kujen, has resurrected Shuos Jedao-or bits of him, at least-in a new and “improved” body and given him command of what is left of the Hexarchate’s Kel forces. We pick up nine years after Raven Stratagem, although some chapters are flashbacks set shortly after that book. Finishing a trilogy satisfactorily is no mean feat, especially when you’ve created a universe as intricate and far-flung as Lee’s. I think I’m so well-disposed towards Revenant Gun because of Yoon Ha Lee’s dedication to wrapping up the story. Here we are with the last Machineries of Empire book and possibly my favourite, even though I’m giving it a lower rating than Ninefox Gambit (go figure). ![]() |
