The collection gave me a few hours of undemanding light entertainment at a time when that was what I needed.I would have given only 3.5 stars if that was possible but gave him the other half star because the story 'Confessions of a Shinagawa Monkey' made me smile so much. When Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize many people were shocked one critic said that if Bob Dylan didn't deserve the prize for Literature he at least deserved a Nobel Prize for being Bob Dylan. Many people rave about him and many loathe his writing. For me he is what he is always there when I need some light relief. He generally makes me smile. He is a fan of jazz and the Beatles and just as not every Beatles LP is jam packed with classics, neither is this short story collection.I would say that none of these stories are of great consequence but I enjoyed one or two. And I am not generally a 'fan' sort of person.I think he is a 'Marmite' kind of writer (You either love it or hate it). How to describe this book of short stories? Well, I am something of a fan of Murakami.
